Can training on machines be functional training?
So to answer that we have to ask ourselves what is functional training? It seems to be the catchword in the fitness industry for the past few years and everyone seems to be using it and many have different definitions when asked this question. As defined by Webster Functional is defined as 1): designed to have a practical use, 2): affecting the way a part of your body works, 3): working properly. And Webster defines Training as 1) : the act, process, or method of one that trains 2) : the skill, knowledge, or experience acquired by one that trains.
So if we use that definition then it would tend to let us believe that any training tool that we are able to use to help ourselves improve would be considered functional. It does not limit us to just body weight training, battle ropes and tractor tires, as many would like us to believe. By definition training with machines could be very functional and maybe more for some than for others. Machines offer stability and reduce the risk of injury while allowing the users to work with increased loads. With the ability to work with heavier weight in a controlled environment which leads to increased strength which in return would improve body weight, free weight and other functional training activities.
Functional training could simply be defined as any training or activity that is used to improve our overall quality of life which would allow us to use any tool that is made available to accomplish that. So yes training on machines could be also be Functional training.
